Artpace presents International Artists-in-Residence exhibitions
Ana Fernandez, AM/PM.

SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace San Antonio is presenting the Fall International Artists-in-Residence exhibitions. In November, Ana Fernandez (San Antonio, TX), Alice Khalilova (London, UK), and Clifford Owens (New York, NY) revealed work created during their Artpace residencies. The three artists were selected by London-based curator and radio producer Morgan Quaintance.

Ana Fernandez is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the diverse landscapes of Latino communities in South Texas through landscape painting, portraiture, and through her work as a street vendor in her food truck, Chamoy City Limits. For her Artpace project, AM/PM, Fernandez utilized the traditional technique of fresco to create paintings that act as a window to her life and memories. Painting on non-traditional surfaces such as trash cans and truck mirrors, Fernandez’s exhibition playfully situates viewers in a decidedly South Texas landscape within the gallery.

Alice Khalilova is an Anglo-Russian multimedia artist who lives and works in London. Working fluidly across print, sculpture, and video, Khalilova’s works have critically explored the intersections of technological advancement, spirituality, and philosophy. Her Artpace exhibition, Axon Budged, a reference to Ayn Rand and her iconic novel, Atlas Shrugged, is the culmination of a playful exploration into the concepts of balance and desire. Khalilova’s exhibition includes handmade, large-scale aluminum etchings, an “impossible” climbing wall, and wall-based assemblages that transform the gallery space into a landscape of material tension.

Clifford Owens is a trans-disciplinary artist who works in photography and performance. During his residency, Owens hosted the eighth iteration of his ongoing performance project, Photographs with an Audience, during which he posed questions and prompts to the audience and they responded by allowing Owens to photograph them. Owens exhibition, Peripatetic, includes a selection of photographs from that performance in addition to other photographs and works on paper created during residencies at The MacDowell Colony and Denniston Hill.

The exhibitions will remain on view at Artpace until January 6th, at which time the work will be returned to the artists to travel or be sold into private collections around the world.
