NEW YORK, NY.- Kasmin is presenting a major exhibition of new work by artist and designer David Wiseman (b. 1981). Wisemans first exhibition at the gallery opened at 515 West 27th Street.
Wiseman's work draws inspiration from his fascination with the natural world, global decorative arts traditions, and a reverence for honoring timeless craft techniques. Far from reproducing historic design, however, he breathes new life into interiors and environments. Porcelain cherry blossom ceilings, bronze patterned filigree folding screens, and polished marble and terrazzo inlay furniture affirm and perpetuate the relevance ornament and beauty can play in contemporary architecture and life.
Wisemans exhibition at Kasmin places his work in dialogue with that of key historical figures of the 20th century and established contemporary artists with the gallery such as Les Lalanne and Mattia Bonetti whose work transcends the boundary between fine art and design. This new collaborative partnership with the studio continues the gallerys commitment to launching exhibitions of work that play at the intersection of these disciplines. Wisemans mastery of his crafthe is the sole author of his works from the time of their conception to fabrication and installationand his steadfast dedication to a unique artistic vision, allow him to go beyond such traditional taxonomies.
Paul Kasmin says, I couldnt be more delighted to be working with David Wiseman. He is an unbelievably talented artist, highly intelligenta master craftsman. The upcoming exhibition will surprise and delight even those who know his work well.
Wiseman expressed, I have long admired Kasmins program and am deeply honored to exhibit this new body of work with the gallery.
With his brother, Ari Wiseman, Wiseman established Wiseman Studio in 2017, an independent design studio devoted to the creation and exhibition of Davids work and collaborative projects with galleries, museums, and fellow artists. In 2019 Wiseman Studio will relocate to a 30,000 square foot multi-building former factory complex on the Los Angeles River. Punctuated by gardens that include many of the species that serve as an inspiration to the artist, the complex will also feature Wisemans working studio and exhibition space.
Wiseman has created site-specific installations for public institutions, international brands, and private collections. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), his work is included in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, RISD Museum, and the Corning Museum of Glass.
