Exhibitions opening on June 4:
Vasco Araújo A Moment Apart
The exhibition A Moment Apart offers a cross-sectional perspective on Vasco Araújos work, based on the link established by the artist between the performability of voice and body, through specific devices combining different visual objects. In the work of Vasco Araújo, the voice appears as the space for building both individual and collective identities that create images to confront fiction and reality. On the other hand, the body projects this identity configuration and defines the way in which each human being relates to others and presents him or herself to the world, while at the same time seeing, building and letting him or herself be built by the Other. This exhibition celebrates 20 years of Vasco Araújos artistic production and integrates MAATs programming given the relevance of his national and international career. Araújo was also one of the first winners of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award, in 2002, and is one of the artists represented in the Foundations collection. The exhibition presents artworks which have never been shown in Portugal before, as well as the artists first piece, a video entitled The Postman Always Rings Twice (1999-2000). Mariana Caló & Francisco Queimadela Midnight
Mid-night, the middle of the night, the medium of the night. Darkness and light, shadow and brightness, contour and density, movement and suspension. Matter and image. Animal, vegetable, mineral. Sound, rhythm, silence. The tangible shape of time. Midnight is the title of the exhibition by Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, a duo whose transdisciplinary and multifaceted work revolves around the movement of images. Caló and Queimadela often create complex installations combining film, video and still images with other media, such as drawing, painting and sculpture. Their artworks question in a unique way the potential of artistic research as a methodology for the production of knowledge. Their strong environmental and ecological concerns, and their interest in the relation between biological, vernacular and cultural elements are recurrent aspects of the artistic duo. Expanding on these inquiries, Midnight presents a series of original works resulting from their recent use of cyanotype which dialogue with various sculptural, spatial and cinematic elements.
