NEW YORK, NY.- On June 22nd, LongHouse Reserve debuted Lawrence Weiner’s OUT OF SIGHT, a participatory hopscotch-inspired artwork that aims to inspire and engage through positive visualization.

The text-based installation, which Weiner refers to as a marelle(the French word for hopscotch), is a bold black and white graphic incorporating the artist’s intelligent and poetic play on words. The piece combines wit and whimsey in a game-like format, encouraging inquiry and exploration through the use of phrases such as: “Once Can Only Imagine the Powers That Be,” “The Destination is Straight On,” and “Assuming a Position.” At LongHouse, the 40 foot long work is installed on a pavement in the Squash Court area of the garden.

“A person coming in with whatever situation they find themselves in, the minute they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, they will be able to stand in front of the marelleand realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that’s assuming a position,” -- Lawrence Weiner.

We hope that many of our visitors, especially youth and teens from the community, will find it educational, thought - provoking and a place to contemplate how words affect our lives,” said LongHouse’s Executive Director, Matko Tomicic. Wendy VanDeusen, LongHouse’s curator, shared her excitement about OUT OF SIGHT, “I am so looking forward to LongHouse participating in what I think is so important, language, art, THINKING for oneself - more important now than ever in our recent history.”

The installation is accompanied by additional OUT OF SIGHTelements including educational programming in visual art, music and dance for local youth and teens. The programs will utilize the core principles and phrases of Weiner’s work - exuberance, energy, vision, visualization, enlightenment and serendipity- as the foundation for creative activities. By being able to stand, walk, or jump from one position to the next, OUT OF SIGHT invites visitors from schools, camps, and educational organizations from surrounding communities to consider the importance visualization and goal setting.

OUT OF SIGHT has previously been installed at The Perez Art Museum, Miami; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and in the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. During the summer of 2019, OUT OF SIGHT will be installed in six parks throughout the city of Chicago. The artwork has been translated into Spanish, Mandarin, French and Dutch.
