ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.- As of January 1, 2005, Catherine David work as Curator for Witte de With, center for contemporary art, in Rotterdam, is drawing to a close. She has been working at Witte de With since 2002, initially as Artistic Director and then as Chief Curator. Her previous work includes the directorship of Dokumenta X (1997) in Kassel. In the immediate future, David will be teaching at the Humboldt University in Berlin. She will also be continuing the series of presentations under the title Contemporary Arab Representations in association with institutions in Germany (Kunstwerke, Berlin; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf), Spain (Arteleku, San Sebastian; Fundacion Tapiés, Barcelona), and elsewhere.
Catherine David’s goodbye is marked by her curatorship of the presentation of the project ONE STEP BEYOND - The Mine Revisited by Lukas Einsele. Einsele’s work explores the interrelationships between the landmine and its victims, making it visible and accessible against the background of global political developments by means of photographs, texts and sound recordings. ONE STEP BEYOND is being shown from January 27 through March 27, 2005. In April, a book about the project will be published under the same title.
Since May 2004, Hans Maarten van den Brink has occupied the post of Director of Witte de With. He is responsible for the exhibition program in 2005, and together with the Board of Directors he is devising a new managerial structure for Witte de With. They intend to reach a definitive decision by spring 2005. The contract with Van den Brink continues through May 2006.
