Museum of Contemporary Art Presents Mona Hatoum
Mona Hatoum, Light Sentence, 1992.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.- The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, presents Mona Hatoum, on view through May 29, 2005. Born in Lebanon, London-based artist Mona Hatoum was travelling in London when war broke out in her homeland and she was unable to return. An emerging artist at the time, her practice was greatly informed by this imposed state of exile and this influence has continued throughout her 30 year career. This major retrospective includes Hatoum’s key works Light Sentence and Corps Etranger (Foreign Bodies). Throughout all her works is an investigation of the body in relation to identity. Born out of war and exile, Mona Hatoum’s work is about the private emotional response to these broader events—transformed by her artistic practice into something that is ultimately very intimate. Spanning the political and the personal, Mona Hatoum’s work is timely and current, from her early performance work and its documentation in film and photography, to more recent installation and sculptural works.
