DALLAS, TX.- It wasn't the Federation-Klingon War, but it was close enough: A fierce tussle over Captain Kirk's command tunic and black pants, worn during the first season of Star Trek, drove the final price of that historic outfit to $125,000 at
Heritage Auctions on Tuesday.
The auction house's 75-lot Star Trek Hollywood & Entertainment Signature® Auction realized $723,138, led by some of the most recognizable outfits worn during The Original Series. Among the auction's top lots were two outfits from the beloved "Mirror, Mirror" episode: Kirk's shiny gold vest made of lurex and adorned with the Terran Empire's requisite sash and medallions, which sold for $50,000; and the bearded Spock's slate-blue sateen wool tunic, which fetched $55,000. Both outfits had been displayed in 1998 at the California State Fair.
Lt. Sulu's red, sashed tunic from "Mirror, Mirror" brought $18,750 during the event, as did Mr. Chekov's command-yellow top from the third season of The Original Series.
Ricardo Montalban's Khan Noonien Singh was not to be outdone: His left-hand glove from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan sold Tuesday for $21,250. It comes from that unforgettable scene during which the 20th century superman reveals his identity to Chekov and Captain Terrell aboard the SS Botany Bay.
Though the auction spanned Trek's history, The Original Series proved the most popular among Tuesday's bidders: One of only three illuminating, flip-top communicators made for Deep Space Nine's "Trials and Tribble-ations" homage sold for $27,500, while modelmaker Greg Jein's Emmy-nominated re-creation of the K-7 space station from the same episode sold for $25,000.
