LONDON, ENGLAND.-Christie’s is delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Ganieve Grewal as Christie's Representative in India, effective immediately. Ms. Grewal’s role will be to promote Christie’s services in India, providing unparalleled access to Christie’s specialists and the international art market. Her first task will be to re-eastablish Christie’s office in Mumbai following its temporary closure at the end of last year.
“This appointment reaffirms Christie’s confidence in the India market and means that Christie’s is the only international auction house with a full-time representative based in India,” said Edward Dolman, Chief Executive Officer of Christie’s Interational.
Ms. Grewal graduated from the University of Delhi in 1996 before gaining a Diploma in Fine and Decorative Arts from Christie’s Education in London in 1996. After working at Christie’s in 1997, Ms. Grewal returned to work in India where she worked in a number of roles in galleries and in an artists’ workshop as well as working in the charitable sector.
Christie’s is also pleased to announce that Yamini Mehta has been appointed Specialist Head of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art, based in New York. She will oversee further expansion in this highly important market that has seen dramatic growth over the last few years. She brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of Indian art to the role.
Christie’s first opened its Indian office in Mumbai in 1995. The auction house currently holds the world auction record for any Indian emerald or jewel established when a magnificent emerald, gold and enamel wine cup of the Mughal period sold for £1.8 million in the Arts of India sale held in 2003. Christie’s was also the first auction house to stage Contemporary Indian Art sales in London during the 1990s moving the sales to New York and Hong Kong in recent years. Christie's now holds the auction record for Contemporary Indian art, setting a benchmark with Tyeb Mehta's Celebration which sold for $317,500 in September 2002. With a regular programme of sales in London, New York and Hong Kong, Christie’s is the world’s leading auction house.
The next scheduled sales of Indian and South-East Asian Art including Modern and Contemporary Indian Art on September 21 in New York and to the Arts of India sale on September 23 in London.
