LONDON, ENGLAND.-To coincide with the London Design Festival, the Crafts Council presents an exhibition that brings together the eight makers shortlisted for the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2005: Metal. Presented in partnership with the Crafts Council and Jerwood Charity, the prize is worth £30,000 to the winner, and is one of the most significant art prizes in the UK. The exhibition just opened at the Crafts Council Gallery.

The makers competing for this year’s Jerwood Applied Arts Prize manipulate a variety of metals, including gold, silver, iron and steel, to form objects ranging from car park grilles to candelabras. They are Frances Brennan, Ane Christensen, David Clarke, Chris Knight, Junko Mori, Hans Stofer, Hiroshi Suzuki and Simone Ten Hompel. The prize will be awarded on 26 September during the London Design Festival to the maker who, in the opinion of an independent panel of judges, has made the most significant contribution to Metal in the last six years.

The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize is a partnership between the Crafts Council and Jerwood Charity. Now in its eleventh year, it is an open submission competition that runs over a six-year cycle covering the following creative disciplines: Metal, Jewellery, Ceramics, Glass, Textiles and Furniture. This is the first year that Metal has been included in the cycle.
