Hans Holbein the Younger, Portrait of Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger, est: £2-3 million.
LONDON, ENGLAND.- -Sotheby's will auction on June 5 a work of art made by Hans Holbein, a German painter who belonged to the court of Henry VIII, which was recently authenticated. The painting is titled Portrait of Thomas Wyatt, a young man who was charged with treason and later decapitated in 1554 after leading a rebellion against Phillip II of Spain. The painting is expected to fetch between US$3.5 and 4.5 million dollars. The work of art is an oil on top of a panel in circular shape measuring 32 centimeters in diameter. The portrait was painted by Holbein between 1539 and 1543, probably in 1541. The painting was originally auctioned by Christie´s in 1974 but was then sold as an anonymous portrait. It was the former head of the National Portrait Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum, Roy Strong, who concluded that the portrait was made by Holbein. It is well known that several members of Wyatt´s family had posed for Holbein too.
