SPRINGFIELD, MO.- The Springfield Art Museum is now presenting Blue on White in the Hartman Gallery. This is the second of three guest-curated exhibitions mounted in this space during 2023. These special exhibitions are the result of collaborations between Museum staff, and staff and students at Missouri State University. These collaborations range from providing space and resources to mount exhibitions, to the study of permanent collection objects, to hands-on learning opportunities in museum work, including art curation, interpretive activities, and public programs.

Blue on White is a special exhibition focused on Chinese blue-and-white ware (青花; qīng-huā) which examines its complex history including its connection to Persia (modern day Iran), the use of important Chinese symbols in its decoration, and its eventual appropriation through imitative wares and exportation across Japan, Europe, and the Americas, reflecting the overlapping tastes of an increasingly globalized world. This exhibition features 27 porcelain pieces pulled from the Museum’s permanent collection. The objects originate from Persia, China, Japan, the Netherlands, France, England, and the United States of America.

Blue on White is guest curated by Jenna Fallert, Hanna Henroid, and Emily Hughes who are all students in Missouri State University's Museum Studies program. These students co-curated this exhibit under the guidance of Missouri State University’s Director of Exhibitions Jodi McCoy, with direction from the Museum’s curatorial and education staff. This exhibition includes Spanish language translations for all exhibition text.

Presenting sponsorship of the 2023 exhibition season is generously provided by the Friends of the Springfield Art Museum, Inc.
