NEW YORK, NY.- C+C Photography Gallery will present Transcendence, a solo exhibition featuring never-before-exhibited works by internationally renowned photographer Christophe von Hohenberg. Opening Wednesday, October 30th at 3 West 57th Street in New York, the exhibition will highlight von Hohenberg’s brand new color series photographed in the summer of 2024, as well as a curated selection of works spanning nearly half of a century of the artist’s impressive and diverse career.

Known for his minimalistic black & white landscapes as well as his bold fashion and celebrity portraiture dating back to the late 1970s, von Hohenberg’s newest series offers a unique perspective from the seasoned artist. Pairing calming shades of blues, greens, purples, and oranges, von Hohenberg invites the viewer to step inside each scene, and to thus bear witness to the sublime, transcendent power of nature. For von Hohenberg, taking in the beauty of the world around him can be, at times, a meditative, and even spiritual experience. It is his intention that by capturing these vibrant moments through his camera he may evoke the same sort of peaceful respite for the viewer.

Originating from the Latin, the literal meaning of the word “transcendence” is to “climb” or to “go beyond,” or in other words, to explore beyond one’s physical existence to gain greater clarity. Von Hohenberg sees the process of transcendence as a vital part of both his own contemplative, creative experience as an artist, as well as of the powerful, emotional experience intended for his viewer. In the words of one of von Hohenberg’s biggest inspirations, Pablo Picasso, “It begins with an emotion. Without an emotion, without love, what is the point in making anything?” Von Hohenberg believes each and every work must first begin with an emotion. It is then up to the viewer to perceive or interpret that emotion in their own way—be it in the form of a meditation, a memory, or something completely new.

Von Hohenberg first began shooting for American Vogue in 1979, and has since worked with numerous esteemed global publications and brands including Interview, Vanity Fair, French Vogue, German Vogue, The New York Times, Givenchy, Estee Lauder, and more. Von Hohenberg’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa, Fotografiska in Sweden, and the American Cultural Center in Munich, and is housed in the permanent collections of the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton and the Norton Museum in Palm Beach, as well as private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. His critically acclaimed book Andy Warhol: The Day the Factory Died won the 2007 AIGA Book Award and the Photo News District Award, which was followed by numerous other successful photography books including Another Planet: New York Portraits 1976-1996, Shadow of the Gods: Mexico City, and most recently, The White Album of the Hamptons. Von Hohenberg will be signing a limited quantity of his most collected books at the opening reception on October 30th.

To complement von Hohenberg’s new 2024 color releases, the gallery is thrilled to exhibit selections from the photographer’s widely celebrated Andy Warhol Memorial series taken outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1987, as well as von Hohenberg’s personal favorites from his vast collection spanning the last 45 years.
