WICHITA, KS.- The Ulrich Museum of Art presents Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe. British-born, Los Angeles-based writer and artist Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe is the subject of this seasons Ulrich Project Series. Gilbert-Rolfe continues the tradition of nonobjective abstract painting and, among other concepts, deals with the relationship between color and drawing.
As a 17-year-old English art student he visited an exhibit at the Tate Gallery in London that included paintings by Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman and said in an interview with The Brooklyn Rail that that experience is what determined that he should come to the U.S. Newmans paintings gave Gilbert-Rolfe a sense of space that he had only felt in films like Howard Hawkes Red River, and he said that they "seemed to be about America in some way."
Gilbert-Rolfe didnt think hed live in America for more than three years, but after being invited to teach at California Institute of Arts for one semester, he ended up teaching there for six years. He was then hired to develop the MFA program at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., where he is the chair of graduate studies. He also is a visiting tutor at the Royal Academy Schools in London. In addition, he has had teaching assignments at Princeton, Yale and Florida State University. The exhibition runs through Nov. 12.
