SEATTLE, WA.- The Henry Art Gallery presents the exhibit Monsen 75 at 75 through October 22. In his 75th birthday year, the Henry honors the collecting endeavors of Joseph Monsen with a selection of the collectors 75 favorite photographs. Dr. Monsen has collected the broadest array of photographs spanning the mediums history. On view will be images by photographys pioneers including William Henry Fox Talbot and Gustave Le Grey, the groundbreaking work of Man Ray and Herbert Bayer, innovations by Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, and William Eggleston, right up to late twentieth-century masterpieces by Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Cindy Sherman.
Joseph Monsen was born on March 13, 1931, in Payson, Utah. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Utah in 1953, a master of arts degree from Stanford University in 1954, and a Ph.D. from the University of California in 1960. He held the position of assistant professor of economics at Brigham Young University from 1960 to 1963, when he accepted an appointment as associate professor in the Department of Business, Government, and Society at the University of Washington. He remained at the University of Washington, serving as acting chairman of the Department of Business, Government and Society from 1965 to 1968 and chairman from 1973-1981. He spent the year 1971-1972 as visiting professor of public policy in the Stanford Graduate School of Business. From 1985 until his retirement from the University of Washington, he was professor of management and organization.
Monsens research interests were varied and he published many books and articles in such fields of study as capitalist, socialist, and communist economic systems; international business; and the management and control of nationalized companies. R. Joseph Monsen and his wife, Elaine, are collectors of ceramics and photography.
