DOYLESTOWN, PA.- An installation of four dynamic granite and glass sculptures created by artist Christoph Spath will by on view at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown from November 18, 2006 through February 25, 2007. The exhibit, located on the grounds between the Museum and the Bucks County Library Center, is part of an Outdoor Sculpture Program highlighting the work of contemporary American sculptors. This ongoing series of free-to-the-public sculpture exhibits is sponsored by Premier Bank.
Christoph Spath's expressive works are primarily carved in stone, which he often combines with glass to effuse the sculpture with light. As he explains, "I always consider the way in which light will be reflected in the glass as time passes, and this movement is integral to the overall design of the piece." His primary inspiration is drawn from forms of ancient origin that are found across many cultures, including the column, the portal, the monolith and the wheel. His sculptures start out as a simple block of stone; as he begins to carve, he searches for a balance between the natural stone and the emerging form. "The glass-filled voids that often appear in my work represent the inner space," he says, "the soul if you will."
Currently a resident of Lambertville, New Jersey, Spath was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and studied architecture and stone sculpture in Aachen and Dusseldorf. In 1982 he settled in Vermont, where he lived and worked for 15 years as a Sculptor in Residence at the Vermont Marble Exhibit and as a teacher of sculpture and stone carving. In 1997 he became the head of the newly formed Johnson Atelier Stone Division in Mercerville, New Jersey. Following its closure in 2003, Spath joined a group of acclaimed sculptors in founding the Digital Stone Project in Mercerville, New Jersey. This not-for-profit, artist-run corporation, managed and directed by Spath, explores the full potential of advanced stoneworking technology, serves as a resource to the local, national and international sculpture communities and offers educational programs and apprenticeships.
Spath's work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe. His large-scale sculptures are on permanent view in such varied locations as the University of Maine; State University of New York - Fredonia; the Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in Hamilton, Ohio; the Public Art Project in Iowa City, Iowa; the Chianti Sculpture Park in Pievasciata, Italy; and more locally at Bristol Myers Squibb in New Brunswick, New Jersey; Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey; and Merck and Co. in Rahway, New Jersey.
The Michener Art Museum's installation includes four sculptures dated 2004 through 2006 on loan from the artist's personal collection. To learn more about Christoph Spath, and to view a photo gallery of his work, visit www.spath.org.
