BERLIN.- After nearly seven years as Artistic Director and Curator, Lisa Long will depart from her position at the Julia Stoschek Foundation, effective April 30, 2025.
Since joining the institution in 2018, Long has played a pivotal role in shaping the foundation's artistic vision and international reputation with an extensive program of exhibitions, performances, screenings, public programs, publications, and podcasts. Her curatorial approach emphasized intergenerational dialogues between historical and contemporary perspectives while advancing the visibility of underrepresented artists and global narratives.
Informed by her experiences at JSF and the growing need for alternative working models in the art world, Long is departing to found the curatorial agency Companion Culture. Its mission: to strengthen the art ecosystem by uniting resources and expertise from both the public and private sectors, fostering synergies, and building sustainable structures for innovative artistic projects.
We need people like Lisa Long to spearhead initiatives like Companion Culture. The art world is changing, and the approach Companion Culture offers will bring in new ideas and models, says Julia Stoschek.
During her tenure at the Julia Stoschek Foundation, Long curated major group exhibitions, including A Fire in My Belly (2021), at dawn (2022), Unbound: Performance as Rupture (2023), and After Images (2024). Large-scale solo exhibitions featured pioneers such as Lynn Hershman Leeson and Ulysses Jenkins, and her inaugural program, horizontal vertigo (20192020), highlighted solo presentations by Sophia Al Maria, Meriem Bennani, Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz, A.K. Burns, Rindon Johnson, and WangShui, often introducing their work to Europe or Germany.
With her impeccable instinct for time-based art, along with her bold curatorial vision, Lisa Long has never just presented art but has cultivated spaces for discussion, reflection, and engagement that resonated with both local and international audiences," says Julia Stoschek.
Lisa Long curated further solo exhibitions featuring artists Stephanie Comilang & Simon Speiser and the dance collective (LA)HORDE. She also facilitated Double Featurea format designed to provide emerging artists with visibility across both JSF locationsand organized ambitious performances with artists such as Colin Self (2019), caner teker (2021), LABOUR (2022), and Caique Tizzi (2022).
Her final projects at the foundation include the first-ever reader on media art pioneer Lynn Hershman Leeson, featuring texts spanning the past fifty years, as well as a podcast exploring performance and video art. The podcast, developed in collaboration with Assistant Curator Line Ajan, features renowned scholars Peggy Phelan, Amelia Jones, and Uri McMillan, among others.
Im deeply grateful to have collaborated with such inspiring artists, both through exhibitions and collection-building, and to have received immense support from my colleagues and Julia Stoschek in articulating my ideas, says Lisa Long. Engaging with this remarkable collection has transformed my understanding of art and its power to shape the future.
