MUNICH, GERMANY.- Walter Storms Galerie is proud to present its third exhibition dedicated exclusively to the work of Roland Fischer. His most recent photographs depict skyscraper façades in Brazil, the US and China and will be shown along with his latest set of works, Alhambra.

This series was inspired by pictures of the Granada Alhambra taken by the famous pioneers of photography in the 19th century, which are now located at the Fondo Fotografico Achive of the University of Navarra in Pamplona. Fischer had been invited to the archive to work with and research the collection. Some of these early photographs reappear in digitalized form in his current works.

Today, nothing inside the ancient fortress walls reminds us of the age of romanticism when the first photographers were searching the ruins for motifs. The harem ladies hiding behind the ornamented windows of their rooms have disappeared forever, having yielded their space to the representatives of the modern tourist industry of which the Alhambra is undoubtedly a part.

Roland Fischer's complexly arranged photographic works visually expel these modern realities, thus restoring the monuments' silent forms. Being themselves exempt from temporality, they insist on the immateriality of location.

Roland Fischer (* 1958) is one of the most renowned German photographers of our time. Unlike many of his peers, he lives and works in Munich and not in Düsseldorf. In 1987, Fischer's portraits of nuns and monks brought him instant fame. His subsequent major works include the Los Angeles portraits, the cathedrals, the collective portraits, and the skyscraper façades. In 2003, the museum of contemporary art Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich dedicated an extensive retrospective to Fischer's complete works. This was followed by a project-oriented tour of exhibitions through Spain in 2004.
