As Leon Zupan concludes his tenure as Board Chair, the AGA welcomes two new Board Co-Chairs, Peggy Garritty and Sheila O’Brien.

EDMONTON.- The Art Gallery of Alberta announced updates to the leadership of its Board of Directors. As Leon Zupan concludes his tenure as Board Chair, the AGA welcomes two new Board Co-Chairs, Peggy Garritty and Sheila O’Brien.

Leon Zupan served six years on the AGA Board before becoming Chair in January 2020. Drawn to the AGA as a place to connect people of all ages to art, Leon’s dedication and leadership guided the organization through exciting and challenging times. His contributions have shaped the AGA’s strategic vision and strengthened its role as Alberta’s hub for visual arts and culture.

“We are very grateful to Leon for his years of service and leadership at the AGA, and we look forward to the fresh vision Peggy and Sheila will bring as Co-Chairs.” -Catherine Crowston, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the AGA.

Peggy Garritty completed a four-year term as Chancellor of the University of Alberta in 2024 and was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her contributions to the community. From leading the transformation of the ATB Financial brand to holding board positions with prominent arts and health organizations, Peggy is a passionate advocate for community and culture.

Sheila O’Brien is a respected business leader, philanthropist, and Member of the Order of Canada. With a distinguished career spanning corporate leadership, human resources, and governance, she has served on numerous boards across Canada, including the Human Rights Commission. A passionate advocate for the arts, education, and social equity, Sheila brings decades of leadership and community service experience to the AGA. Notably, Sheila becomes the first Board Chair in the AGA’s history based in Calgary, reflecting the organization’s province-wide reach and its role as Alberta’s public art gallery, connecting communities across the province.

The AGA extends its heartfelt thanks to Leon Zupan for his remarkable leadership, steady guidance, and lasting impact. The AGA is excited to welcome Peggy Garritty and Sheila O’Brien as Co-Chairs, based in Edmonton and Calgary. Their passion, experience, and fresh perspectives will help lead the AGA into an inspiring new chapter.
