40th Anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.



LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Academy Museum presents its new film series, public events, and education programs for August. Learn more about our upcoming programs below.

As part of the Spotlights Screening Series, be sure not to miss the 40th Anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on August 9.

Barbie to Anna Karenina: The Cinematic Worlds of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer is on view at the Academy Museum through October 26, 2026.

Drop-In Workshop for Families: Production Design and Miniature Prop-making

Aug 2–Aug 16 | August’s Drop-in Workshop for Families is inspired by the exhibition Barbie to Anna Karenina: The Cinematic Worlds of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer. Families can design and create their own miniature props.

40th Anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

Aug 9 | The program will begin with a donation to the Academy Museum of the red bicycle screen-used in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. The donation will be made by Allison Berry on behalf of the Paul Reubens Estate.

Study the Past, Create the Future! Teen Short Film Showcase

Aug 10 | Join us in celebrating the creativity of Los Angeles’ next generation of filmmakers at the Academy Museum. The museum’s Teen Council has selected short films made by teens from throughout Los Angeles who were challenged to create a short film inspired by their favorite director.

American Gurl: Seeking...

Jul 24–Aug 16 | Guest programmed by curators Zehra Zehra and Kilo Kish, these films offer nuanced perspectives on how women of color navigate the complexities of systems and institutions.

Gallery Spotlight: Sound Mixing Blade Runner 2049

Aug 22 | Join Academy Award-winning sound mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill in conversation as they discuss their works of mixing Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

Summer Of Camp!

Jun 1–Aug 30 | Inspired by Susan Sontag’s famous essay on camp, this series interrogates the idea of a “guilty pleasure” and proclaims your right to enjoy a movie simply because it’s fun!

Sips on the Terrace

Saturdays in July and August | 1–7pm | Experience summer’s golden hour high above the city on the Academy Museum’s Dolby Family Terrace, with live DJ sets and a refreshing Fanny’s cocktail in hand, every Saturday afternoon this summer.
