LONDON, ENGLAND.-The total for Sothebys 20th Century British Art sale was £7,706,960 ($15,067,107). Sir Winston Churchills View of Tinherir, signed with initials, oil on canvas sold for £612,800 ($1,198,024), a record for the artist at auction. Patrick Herons Yellow Painting with Orange and Brown - Ochre Squares: June - Oct 1959, oil on canvas sold for £635,200 ($1,241,816)to an anonymous buyer. This was a record for the artist at auction.
Commenting, James Rawlin, the specialist in charge, said: We are absolutely delighted with the resultsof todays sale, which established a total of 15 new artists records. The total of £7.7 million represents the highest total ever achieved for a 20th Century British Art sale at Sothebys £2.9 million more than the previous record.
We are thrilled with the price for the newly-discovered painting by Sir Winston Churchill, which more than tripled its pre-sale low estimate. The record price achieved for Patrick Heron is almost double the previous record for the artist set at Sothebys in June this year and works by a number of his contemporaries, including Frost, Heath and Wynter also performed exceptionally well, setting new records. From the early part of the century, records were also established for works by Bevan andNicholson.
