MOSCOW, RUSSIA.- Gary Tatintsian Gallery will present Eugeny Chubarov, on view May 17 through June 20, 2007. Who is Eugeny Chubarov? This question is commonly asked after a new player appeared on the stage; and you have to pay attention to him henceforth.

This was the most frequently asked question after an abstraction work by Eu. Chubarov was sold for a record price for Russian modern art at the Sothbey's on 15 Feb. 2007.

It's quite usual for Russia that an artist is broadly spoken about and noticed by the art community and press only after he died or his work was sold for solid money. Fortunately, Chubarov, whose name can be met in art encyclopedias and reference books, is alive. He is well known in professional art circles. He has already had some solo shows in the West: from Germany to the US. In 2004 his personal exhibition took place in the Russian Museum (St.-Petersburg).

First of all it's interesting to learn the immediate judgments about his works that come from his famous colleagues-artisans, critics, gallerists (gallery runners), and not what formal accounts say about him.

Ilya Kabakov (artist): We were guests to a living genius (after Chubarov's studio visit with Patsykov and Pivovarov in 1978-79).

Vitaly Patsyukov (critic): He's a mammoth frozen in a lump of ice. He has lived there all evolution long – from the amoeba up to now days. He has recorded it all to his “hard drive”, and after being thawed he managed to present the whole accumulated information into one plane.

Gary Tatintsian (gallerist or gallery runner): I’ve chosen Chubarov because of his capacity to reflect, to react on what he sees, what he is told or offered. Every his painting is a Space, a macroworld that has any part of its microworld genius and well elaborated. He’s entirely open to the experience of world art; he feels sharply what happens around him. While living in Russian province, he made things based on traditional Russian consciousness. It is deprived of intellectual culture but he was inspired by its mystical nature. While working in the West, Chubarov lived among catalogues and books but he didn’t strive to copy anything what already existed. He created something new. He maneuvered between figurative and abstract world art. It was a kind of slalom. As a result Chubarov entirely took himself off from the “prehistory”: not wanting to compete with it he went to a direction never visited before.

Sam Keller (“Art Basel” fair director): Chubarov’s works are one of the brightest impressions of “Art-Moskwa 2006”.

Alexander Borovsky (The Newest Tendencies department; the Russian Museum): It’ so wit and well made that it resembles the whole art history taken together.

Gary Tatinsian: After some works by Chubarov you can’t even guess if it was a man or a woman, a youth or an old man who made it. An extraordinary felling of perception: subtle, celestial, transparent. With his calligraphic aesthetic and absolute completeness of intellectual abstraction, in some of his works Chubarov is purer than the adherents of “gesture painting” although it may sound blasphemous. It’s a “molecular” way of thinking, elegancy that resembles Chinese art.

You will have an opportunity to make your own opinion of who Eugeny Chubarov is if you visit an exhibition of his abstraction works made in 1990s that rank with the best patterns of the abstractionism all over the world. You shall have a chance to acquaint yourselves with them without any post-auction stir and sensation.
