Laurel McMechan - The Space Between |

|
DENVER.-sellarsprojectspace is pleased to present new paintings by Denver based artist Laurel McMechan in an exhibition titled The Space Between. This exhibition opens on Friday, May 18, 2007, with a reception for the artist from 6 - 10 p.m. and in conjunction with the Tennyson Street Cultural District’s First Friday Artwalk and Stroll a closing reception on Friday, June 1, 2007, from 6 - 10 p.m. This exhibition will continue through June 16th, 2007.
Current events have directly influenced McMechan’s imagery. McMechan’s brother has been in the military for several years and the fear of his presence in Iraq during this war has fueled her work over the last several years. Her latest series began with a focus on the military dress uniform, with its shiny, clean and crisp outward appearance. The dress uniform, as opposed to combat fatigues, embodies a regimented ceremonial existence, with only secondary consideration given to function. The clothing's clean look, as juxtaposed with the actions performed by the bodies in such specific clothing speaks to the stressed interaction between the individual and the larger group in which it exists.
