LONDON.-Three years after the success of her first solo show “ Fifty Experiments - One Love” and recent sell out appearance at NY contemporary art fair AAF NYC in June 2007, Izabella Kay presents her 500 oil painting installation. Originally entitled “Phantasmagoria” (2006), a fraction of which was presented at Focus 2006 Exhibition during design week at Chelsea Design Centre in association with The World of Interiors Magazine, this time the complete work of 500 is re-assembled in situ to create 10 pieces of art, acquiring not only new dimensions but also new meaning. The perception alters as the artist digs deep into her lexicon of colours and textures presenting an exquisite poetic visual experience, sensitively arranged taking us on an evocative and emotional journey.

“Originally designed and presented in 2006 as project entitled “ Phantasmagoria “, Perception Altered is my latest experiment and attempt to explore and nurture the mystery and poetry of paint, its infinity and its narrative. The installation, consisting of five hundred oil paintings attempted to make an illusion of the reality surrounding us, suggesting variations of moods, seasons and most of all our personal recollections. The repetitive character of canvases provided it with a natural rhythm. Indeed it was a sequence of associative imagery, constantly changing and composed of numerous elements. Colour, being the major protagonist, continuously translated the charge of emotions. But the installation is dynamic and changing: it lives and breathes. Energy is set free as freedom of assembly gives a multitude of options. Suddenly it does not imitate the nature but creates it. The perception is well beyond the layer of colour. One cannot escape the consequences of re-arrangement, like we cannot escape changes, interactions between us, the responsibility for our actions. It projects a difference to something that happened before. It presents a yearning for a change, but a regret when the change occurs. Altered state of mind creates a new structure and illuminates new mystery as narrative is interrupted. The freedom to alter is always there but you encounter limitations. A new sequence or strategy, a charge of emotions will leave its mark on the surrounding reality. Flexibility is there but exists not without consequences. Every small piece represents a tiny fraction of life, or its recollection, landscape, memory or emotion, spirituality or physicality. It lives and dies. It is distinctive or plain. It is different to others because of different rhythm or intervening emotion. It represents our freedom of choice but that is, as we know just an illusion. And an illusion it remains: dreamlike, mysterious, colourful and our own.”
