Michael Kovner: New York Paintings
Michael Kovner, The City Museum.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The George Krevsky Gallery takes great pleasure in announcing a new exhibition of paintings by Israeli artist Michael Kovner, opening Thursday, September 27th through Saturday, October 27th. In this, his second solo show in both the United States and at the Krevsky Gallery, Kovner’s love of his native Jerusalem’s cityscapes is joined with his novel perspective of New York City and its surroundings.

Michael Kovner, son of famed poet and political activist Abba Kovner, was born on a kibbutz outside of Jerusalem. From an early age, he showed a special aptitude for the arts and was always encouraged by his parents to pursue his creativity. His art was inspired by an intimate relationship with the land as a result of walking amidst the farmland of his childhood home. Later, while training in a helicopter as part of a select unit of the Israeli Army, he was able to observe the land from a bird’s-eye view. With this foundation of inspiration, Kovner worked and studied in both New York City and Israel. He has come to focus mainly on figural depictions of the land, although he was taught the Abstract Expressionism of the New York School by Philp Guston.

Kovner’s most recent artworks, exhibited in New York Paintings, seem to convey the solitude and the loneliness observed by an outsider of New York. Yet through his attention to the nuances of daylight on a scene, and his brilliant use of color, he is able to demystify the cold and brutal industrial surroundings that stand between his large studio window and the skyline of Manhattan. By doing so, he is able to unite the world of the artist from within the studio, with the people outside and the environment in which they all live.

Kovner’s artwork may be seen in public collections at the President’s Residence and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Jewish Museum in New York City.
