MIAMI.- For the second year, Art Basel Miami Beach features the sector Art Supernova. This platform offers 20 galleries - from Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece India, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain and the United States - the opportunity to present recent works by their emerging artists. This sector aims to reinvent the traditional form of gallery presentation at art fairs, with a collaborative approach that links the participating galleries in a new way. The exhibitors in Art Supernova have interconnected exhibition spaces, common storage room, and shared facilities for presenting works on paper, videos, performances, artist files, books and catalogs.
Ellen de Brujine features A Sculpture Turning into a Conversation (2008), by Dutch artist Falke Pisano (1978) which exists both as a live lecture and as a double projection with voice-over, describing how a sculpture turns into a conversation. Artists Lorna Macintyre (born 1977) and Annette Ruenzler (born 1968), chosen by Galerie Joanna Kamm, present an interplay between sculpture, photography and drawing. The Breeder shows new paintings by Greek artist Stelios Faitakis (born 1976), who borrows the elements from the visual language of Mexican muralism and graffiti as well as paintings by Dutch artist Iris van Dongen (born 1975), presenting heroines combining the elegance of pre-Raphaelite painting with the stern glamour of film noir actresses.
Gallery Chemould Prescott Road mounts a group show including Indian artist Hema Upadhyay (born 1972) who in her works narrates her personal and artistic transition to Bombay, the city where she now resides. Nathan Mabry (born 1978) was selected for a solo show by Cherry and Martin Gallery, presenting his sculptures mixing modern aesthetics with ancient imagery. Regina Gallery is showing new works by Russian artist Pavel Pepperstein (born 1966) and photographs by Sergey Bratkov (born 1960), confronting social taboos of the Soviet and post-Soviet context.
Gavlak Projects will present a solo exhibition from Ft. Lauderdale-based artist Jose Alvarez (born 1968), while Galeria Casas Riegner will be exhibiting new drawings by Colombian artist Johanna Calle (born 1965) and The Third Line will change the projects by contemporary Middle Eastern artists every day.
Finally Nils Staerk Gallery will mount two different stands for the opening and the weekend: From Wednesday to Friday, they will show figurative works that share a common interest in depicting a fantastical narrative universe by Olaf Breuning (born 1970), Martin Bigum (born 1966) and Ed Templeton (born 1972). Following this, Staerk will present works by Jone Kvie (born 1971), Mads Gamdrup (born 1967) and Nils Erik Gjerdevik (born 1962) during the weekend.
