The Winnipeg Art Gallery Presents Fitzgerald In Context
Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, Untitled (Woman with Camera Outdoors) date unknown. Oil on canvas. Collection of The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Gift from the Douglas M. Duncan Collection. G-70-569.

WINNIPEG.- The Winnipeg Art Gallery presents Fitzgerald In Context, on view through May 17, 2009. The exhibition was curated by Dr. Marilyn Baker, Professor of Art History, University of Manitoba. FitzGerald in Context offers a unique view of the multifaceted and diverse career of one of Manitoba's most renowned artists, Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald (1890-1956). Through the presentation of artwork, commercial design and archival documents, viewers gain a sense of the overall weight of FitzGerald's influence on Winnipeg's small but flourishing artistic community during the first half of the 20th century. At the same time, the exhibition provides an investigative and contextual perspective on FitzGerald. Through the complementary display of work by mentors, peers, and students such as Donald MacQuarrie, Emily Carr, Caven Atkins, and members of the Group of Seven, viewers are brought to a better understanding of FitzGerald's historically shifting interrelation with and dependence on a community of artists. The exhibition also raises important issues tied to FitzGerald's ancestry, his shifting attitude toward war, intellectual ambitions, and family life, all of which together present a complex picture of the artist and his times. This exhibition is generously supported by Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP.
