Canadian Dot Cent brings $248,750 at Heritage Auctions' $10.43+ million World and Ancient Coin Event
The Pittman-Krause 1936 Canadian Dot Cent realized $248,750.

DALLAS, TX.- The renowned Pittman-Krause 1936 Canadian Dot Cent, the most famous coin in Canadian numismatics and one of just three known to exist realized $248,750 during Heritage Auction's 10.43+ million World & Ancient Coins Signature® Auction at the Chicago International Coin Fair, April 18-23. The auction sold 92.8% by value and 90.9% by lot.

The George V 1936 Dot Cent, MS63 Red PCGS, Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, is far and away the most famous of the three known Dot cents, having been stolen from the Pittman home in 1964 and later returned (with scratches in the right obverse field) in an envelope with other coins.

The World & Ancient Coins event offered more than 5,800 lots across six sessions live and online and marks the largest CICF event in Heritage's history, said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Executive Vice President of International Numismatics at Heritage.

"Just a few years ago, CICF auctions were but a fraction of what they are today both in value and diversity of lots," Bierrenbach said. "The partnership between Heritage and Krause Publications, through Scott Tappa and his crew, have been greatly successful in putting together a great international numismatic event. It was our largest CICF event yet and we look forward to future auctions in conjunction with the coin show."

Several lots of the unprecedented selection of high-grade ancient and world coins exceeded their estimates, including a Nicholas I platinum 12 Roubles 1835 СПБ, AU55 NGC which realized $95,000. Minting of platinum 12 Roubles began in 1830 and ended in 1845 when all platinum coins were recalled and melted. Very few survived of the original mintage, which is particularly noteworthy for the 12 Roubles, as it had an extremely tiny mintage of just 127 pieces.

The auction's cornerstone collection was the RLM Collection of Brazilian Gold, which realized $1.2 million — a record for a collection of this type. Featuring 131 gold coins from Portugal's richest colonial territory, the collection featured perhaps the finest Minas 6400 Reis in existence: a Joao V gold 6400 Reis 1733/23-M, KM135, Russo-281, Gomes-132.05, AU58 NGC in superior condition, which realized $58,750. The collection's top lot was a 1729 Joao V gold 12800 Reis of the Second Shield Type AU Details NGC, which reached $64,625, while the iconic Half Dobrao of 1724, a Joao V 10000 Reis 1724-M, KM116, Russo-244, Gomes-104.01, AU55 NGC, realized a strong $38,187. Part II of the RLM Collection will be offered in Heritage's World & Ancient Coins Signature Auction, Sept. 26 in Long Beach, Calif., and Part III crosses the block in January 2014 at Heritage's World and Ancient Coin Signature Auction held during the New York International Numismatic Convention.

"Strength continues to predominate in world coins and ancients with Russia becoming once again one of the leading areas, together with high grade British, Brazil, India and China," said Warren Tucker, Vice President of World Coin Auctions at Heritage. "We have seen an interesting rebound on the Chinese market with increased number of bidder participation."

A choice commemorative 1916 dollar struck in gold, issued on the installation of Yuan Shih-kai as the Emperor Hung Hsien. The dollar, in MS64 NGC, more than doubled its estimate to sell for $58,750. A fine, Year 5 Shekel, dating to the Jewish War (66 - 70 AD) and is considered the best example of the widely discussed small group of coins struck from a single pair of dies, realized $47,000. An exceptional example of the rare Ivan III Rouble, Bitkin 21 (R1), AU55 NGC, boldly struck for the type, with argent-gray, charcoal-gray toning and retaining some original luster, realized $38,187 and a superb 1893 republic gold Pond, KM10.2, MS65 NGC, presenting virtually pristine surfaces, realized $30,550.

Additional highlights include, but are not limited to:

A Victoria gold Proof Una & the Lion £5 1839, rarely seen by most of the world's most experienced collectors, brought $105,750.

A standout among the selection of Ancient coins was a superlative Chalcidian League Tetradrachm, circa 390 BC, which realized $30,550, more than double its pre-auction estimate. The rare find hails from the short-lived defensive coalition of the free cities of the Chalcidice in ancient Greece, who banded together to ward off Athenian and Macedonian imperialism of the time.

A superb 1740 French Louis XV Essai gold Ecu au bandeau AU Details, one of the rarest French issues known, sold for $44,062.

A 1818 Maximilian I Josef Pattern Taler in gold Proof 62 Cameo PCGS, a notable gold Bavarian pattern coin, fetched $29,375.

The first of more than 1,200 original dies and hubs cut by satirist and engraver Karl Xaver Goetz, one of Germany's most prolific medal artists of the 20st century, realized $158,358, led by six lots relating to his infamous Watch on the Rhine medal, which reached a combined $15,915. Future selections from the collection will be offered again in September 2013 with the final selection offered in April 2014.
