FLINT, MICH.- Artist Sam Jury is June’s Artist of the Month at the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan. The award-winning UK artist’s video Over for the Day will open June 1st and run through June 30th 2013 at the Fleckenstein Video Gallery. Named in honor of John and Janie Fleckenstein the gallery was specifically designed for video and features cutting edge media art.

Sam Jury is best known for her hauntingly beautiful photography-based work and video portraits in light. Art in America’s Edward Leffingwell describes Jury’s work as “Ethereal, cinematic and literary in their affect… infused with a mysterious play of figure, palette and light.”

The 8 minute short film depicts the endless drifting of a bound figure in an exterior with no specific time or place and the disruption of matter. The figure is deliberately stripped of identity and covered in white fabric so as to become a "blank" with which the viewer can empathize but also compartmentalize as "other."

Jury’s work is also currently on exhibition at the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis in her solo show Coerced Nature.

Earlier this year Jury was featured in the inaugural exhibitions of the Zaha Hadid designed Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum: In Search of Time, and Global Groove: 1973 – 2012; as well as at the Krannert Art Museum alongside work by Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and William Anastasi in Processing the Everyday.

Sam Jury is a recipient of the Perlmutter Award from the Rose Art Museum honoring “artists on the cusp of international acclaim.” She was awarded first prize by MIT for their program To Extremes: Public Art in a Changing World.

Sam Jury graduated with an MFA in painting from Cornell University followed by a two year Fellowship at the Royal Academy Schools, London completed in 2002. She has lived and worked in the USA and Middle East and is now based in the UK. Sam Jury is represented by Stephen Haller Gallery of New York.
