NEW YORK, NY.- artnet Auctions announced its June 2013 sales calendar. The juxtaposition of classic and contemporary works can be found in two sales this summer: Then and Now: An Homage to the 1913 Armory Show and Point of Departure. Then and Now offers paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and works on paper created over the last 100 years, inspired by the avant-garde 1913 Armory Show. Point of Departure features a range of landscape photography—from the breathtaking to the surreal—by artists working over the last century.

Two other sales focus on emerging collectors: Classics for New Collectors, which features iconic photographic prints, and 5 Under 5: Contemporary Japanese Art, with artwork all priced under US$5,000. artnet offers a point of entry to collecting, not only through artnet Auctions sales, but also with art market tools such as the artnet Price Database and artnet Analytics.

Then and Now: An Homage to the 1913 Armory Show
June 4–11

A century after the 1913 Armory Show, artnet Auctions will showcase how Modern artists in that groundbreaking show set the course for today’s Contemporary Art. From Manet to Picasso, the pioneers of Modernism forged entirely new approaches to technique, style, and perspective. To celebrate the influence of the Modernist avant-garde, Then and Now: An Homage to the 1913 Armory Show juxtaposes Contemporary works with their Modern predecessors. The sale includes Modern works by artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Manet, Man Ray, Wesselmann, Henri Matisse, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Contemporary works by Jean-Michele Basquiat, George Condo, Robert Rauschenberg, Chuck Close, Julian Opie, and Francis Bacon.

Classics for New Collectors
June 5–13

Classics for New Collectors is a special sale of well-priced prints of collectible, classic photographs by celebrated photographers, specifically aimed at emerging collectors. The sale includes works by Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Bill Brandt, Harry Callahan, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Imogen Cunningham, William Eggleston, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, Joel Meyerowitz, Richard Misrach, Irving Penn, Aaron Siskind, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston. Works in the sale have estimates ranging from US$5,000 to 50,000.

5 Under 5: Contemporary Japanese Art
June 11–18

The interest in Contemporary Japanese Art is one that has international appeal and is especially exciting and accessible for new collectors worldwide. 5 Under 5: Contemporary Japanese Art features a diverse selection of art in all media by five of the top Contemporary Japanese artists working today. All works have estimates and Purchase Now prices below US$5,000 hammer. Works in the sale will include paintings, works on paper, photographs, and prints and multiples by artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Point of Departure
June 13–20

Point of Departure captures frontiers near and far: breathtaking environmental work by Edward Burtynsky, Sebastião Salgado, and Chris Jordan, stunning portraits of animals by Peter Beard, Nick Brandt, and Laurent Baheux, sublime landscapes by Richard Misrach and Ansel Adams, classic works of photojournalism by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Steve McCurry, and images of the local American scene by Stephen Shore, Joel Meyerowitz, and Lee Friedlander. Point of Departure presents a range of photographic depictions of our planet, from the well-traveled to the pristine and the exotic.
