VENICE, CA.- The Rose Café was an early advocate of sporting art on the walls of its restaurant. Curator Karen Black has been bringing in artists to share their work since 1979. Through the years, local artists as well as artists from around the globe have had the chance to show at this alternative venue. Over 200 exhibitions of both emerging and established mid-career artists working in a variety of media and interests have been mounted.
To commemorate 33 years, the Rose Café presents a new series entitled “Rose Retrospectives” curated once again by Karen Black. The series was created to celebrate the many artists that have graced its walls.

The first of the series started in February of 2013. The second exhibit in the series is currently on view and runs through July 7th.

Artist Michael Temple is part of the exhibition. The percussionist and founder of the popular band the Bonedaddys, Temple has always been an avid painter. Whether on tour, working as a musician, or in Los Angeles, he has continued to pursue his art. His work has been a part of many exhibitions in cities such as Kansas City, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. In April of this year, his work was featured at both the Santa Monica Airport Art Walk and Trunk Gallery.

Black originally met Temple through his popular band and both have worked together in previous shows at the Rose Café. “It pleases me when Mike uses oils instead of acrylics,” said Black. “So often a painter whose work has a lot of movement and gesture uses faster drying acrylic. Like good music, oils require patience, skill and a lot of disciplined work and technique to bring the notes and the instruments together in harmony. For me, Mike’s paintings are good art, good fun, well-crafted and great to have around.”

Also showing work as part of the second series of "Rose Retrospectives” are artists Dora De Larios, Meg Davenport, Melvin Detroit, Jodi Fuchs, Fred Kaplan, and Cassandra Tondro. The exhibition will be on view through July 7th. The Rose Café is located at 220 Rose Ave. Venice CA. 399-0711

On Friday, July 12th Michael Temple will also be featured in a group show at hale ARTS P A C E on Friday in Santa Monica. The exhibition will be on view through July 24th.
