NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips launches its Fall Photographs sale with superb examples by some of the leading visionaries in the field of photography. The auction will lead off with an Evening Sale consisting of thirty-one outstanding photographs that collectively illustrate the breadth of the field and the strength of the market. The Day Sale that will follow likewise features a wide array of desirable works. Two single-owner sections will be featured throughout both sales, offering many fresh-to-the-market photographs.

The Evening Sale is helmed by Richard Avedon’s iconic portfolio The Family, 1976, estimated at $200,000-300,000. Featuring sixty-nine prints portraying the leading figures presiding over the American political landscape in the 1970s, the portfolio reflects Avedon’s genius in capturing his sitters’ nuanced individuality. Other highlights in the Evening Sale include two dye-transfer portfolios by famed American color photographer William Eggleston: William Eggleston’s Graceland, 1984, estimated at $100,000-150,000, and Troubled Waters, 1980, estimated at $80,000-120,000; Robert Frank’s Parade— Hoboken, New Jersey, 1955, estimated at $100,000-150,000; Alfred Stieglitz’s Mending Nets, 1894, estimated at $80,000-120,000; Edward Steichen’s Brancusi, Endless Column in Steichen’s Garden, Voulangis, France, circa 1923, estimated at $60,000-80,000; Irving Penn’s Three Tulips (Red Shine, Black Parrot, Gudoshnik), 1967, estimated at $60,000-80,000, and Women In Wartime (Dorian Leigh and Evelyn Tripp), New York, 1950, estimated at $50,000-70,000. The latter fashion image will be joined by two other outstanding fashion images that are fresh to the market: Helmut Newton’s Parlour games, Munich, 1992, estimated at $150,000-200,000, and Nude and Police Dog, St. Tropez, 1975, estimated at $150,000-200,000. Additional contemporary works in the Evening Sale include Thomas Struth’s Stanze di Raffaello I, Rome, 1990, estimated at $120,000-180,000; Nobuyoshi Araki’s 101 works for Robert Frank (Private Diary), 1993, estimated at $80,000-120,000; Hiroshi Sugimoto’s United Nations Headquarters, 1997, estimated at $80,000-120,000; and Cindy Sherman’s Untitled #121, 1983, estimated at $60,000-80,000. Other artists whose work will be featured include Peter Beard, Desiree Dolron, Richard Misrach, Vik Muniz and Richard Prince.

Included in the Evening Sale are selections from a single-owner collection titled Property From a Distinguished California Collection. Assembled over three decades, the collection provides a sensitive and loving homage to the many anonymous individuals who were captured under the lens of some of the leading photographers of the 20th-century. Among those highlights are two rare lifetime prints of Diane Arbus’s most desirable images: King and Queen of a senior citizens’ dance, N.Y.C., 1970, estimated at $60,000-80,000, and Patriotic Young Man with a Flag, N.Y.C., 1967, estimated at $60,000-80,000; Robert Frank’s Covered Car— Long Beach, California, 1955-1956, estimated at $50,000-70,000; Irving Penn’s Rag and Bone Man (A), London, 1950, estimated at $50,000-70,000; Dorothea Lange’s Funeral Cortege, End of an era in a small valley town, California, 1938, estimated at $30,000-50,000; and Robert Mapplethorpe’s Calla Lily, 1987, estimated at $40,000-60,000. The remainder of the collection will be offered as a dedicated section opening the afternoon session of the Day Sale and includes excellent works by Irving Penn, Robert Frank, Nick Brandt and Joel-Peter Witkin.

Another single-owner collection offered this season is Carmen: Photographs of a Fashion Icon, consisting of fifteen lots from the personal collection of famed model Carmen Dell’Orefice. As a member of the original wave of celebrated models to sweep the fashion industry in Post-War America, Carmen worked with many of the leading fashion photographers, as exemplified by seven prints by Richard Avedon, each estimated at $10,000-15,000, and all taken during the 1957 Paris Collections. Other artists whose photographs of Carmen are featured in the sale include Irving Penn, Gleb Derujinsky, Cecil Beaton, Erwin Blumenfeld and Victor Skrebneski.

Additional fashion photography will be represented in the Day Sale with Helmut Newton’s portfolio of ten photographs Helmut Newton Photographien, 1998, estimated at $120,000-180,000, as well as his Grand Hôtel de Milan, 2002, estimated at $80,000-120,000; Ormond Gigli’s Lips, 1960, estimated at $15,000-25,000; and Irving Penn’s Bee (A), New York, September, 1995, estimated at $40,000-60,000. Penn’s iconic career will be represented with other highlights throughout the sale, including Five Okapa Warriors, New Guinea, 1970, estimated at $30,000-50,000; and Gerbera Daisy, Gerbera jamesonii ‘Husky’, New York, 2006, estimated at $25,000-35,000. Other classic photographers whose work will be represented in the Day Sale include Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, Claude Cahun, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Edward Weston and Brassaï.

Contemporary photographs will be well represented throughout the sale, with a number of William Eggleston’s works, including Memphis, circa 1970, estimated at $30,000-50,000; Untitled (Paducah, Kentucky), 1996, estimated at $20,000-30,000; and Black Bayou Plantation near Glendora, Mississippi (Red Barrel), 1974, estimated at $25,000-35,000. Other contemporary highlights include Vik Muniz’s Shoeshine Boy, after Lewis Hine from Rebus, 2005, estimated at $30,000-40,000 and Medea, about to Kill her Children, after Eugène Delacroix from Pictures of Junk, 2006, estimated at $25,000-35,000; Massimo Vitali’s Madima Ragno d’Oro, 2005, estimated at $30,000-50,000; Elger Esser’s Cap Hornu, Frankreich, 2005, estimated at $30,000-50,000; Sebastião Salgado’s The Eastern Part of the Brooks Range, Alaska, 2009, estimated at $35,000-40,000; David Goldblatt’s Selected Images from The Transported of KwaNdebele, 1983-1984, estimated at $30,000-50,000; and Tina Barney’s Jill and Polly in the Bathroom, 1987, estimated at $30,000-50,000. Other contemporary photographers represented include Adam Fuss, Wim Wenders, Peter Beard, Robert Polidori, Pieter Hugo, Andres Serrano, Lalla Essaydi, Edward Burtynsky and Ahmet Ertug.

Offered for the first time in a Phillips Photographs sale are works by Sharon Core, Vladimir Glynin, Oleg Dou, and Sergei Borisov.
