LONDON.- September 11th, 2013, marks the 40th anniversary of the bloody coup led by Augusto Pinochet in 1973, overthrowing Chile’s democratically elected socialist President Salvador Allende. On this anniversary MAPP is publishing a digital translation of Chile from within, a book of documentary photography by Chilean photographers, originally edited with Susan Meiselas, including texts by Ariel Dorfman and Marco de la Parra (first published in paper form in 1991). The book chronicles the country’s regression into a place of fear, exile and visceral silence, beginning with the methodical torture and murder of Allende’s supporters. The Chilean photographers worked for underground newspapers and magazines, putting their lives on the line daily to record the brutality of the “Pinochet Years”. The ebook culminates with the plebiscite of 1988 which ultimately ended Pinochet’s dictatorship, with tributes to those affected by an era that resulted in the death of over 3,000 people and the torture of around 30,000.

These images had to be taken by people who lived in Chile, from within, developed within the deafening din of an unending time... These images are confessional, suicidal; it hurt to take them. I will confront the pain, says the artist, I will dream what my people, what I myself do not dare to dream. In spite of themselves, these photographers took pictures, sometimes not knowing of what.
