SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Gallery 16 welcomes artist Jason Jägel. for his first exhibition with the gallery. From the Sky Rivers Look Like Snakes presents three bodies of work; large oil paintings, works on paper and smaller mixed media peices. This marks the first time Jason has exhibited oil paintings since Bay Area Now 1 at the Yerba Buena Center in 1997.

Jason writes, “As a jumping off point, these new paintings reference the immediacy of my daily brush-pen drawings made in pocket-sketchbooks. Currently entering my 20th year of exhibiting, I am driven to loop back over my earliest impulses as a means to push forward”.

Jason Jägel's work cultivates a strong improvisational component. One, born out of a form of autobiographical fiction, his love of music, comics and literary fiction. He has created a stylistic form that is immediately recognizable. His work blends elements of abstract painting, comic flatness and linguistic expression. The spontaneous and improvisational paintings are often dense accumulations of these influences.

Jägel received his MFA from Stanford University (2002). Recently Jason was invited to create a limited edition project entitled "Take Me With You” with THE THING QUARTERLY. He has been featured in numerous solo and group shows since 1995 including those in New York, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Milan, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans and more. Jagel's work appears in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The UCLA Hammer Museum and the Portland Museum of Art, among others.
