GREENWICH, CONN.- At the
Bruce Museum in Greenwich on Tuesday, September 9, Dr. Daniel Ksepka, the new Curator of Science at the Bruce, will be discussing his ground-breaking research on the fossilized remains of an extinct giant bird with the largest wingspan of any bird ever to have lived. Pelagornis sandersi was identified by Dr. Daniel Ksepka and became worldwide science news earlier this summer when Dr. Ksepkas findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (July 7, 2014).
"Pelagornithids were like creatures out of a fantasy novel - there is simply nothing like them around today," says Dr. Ksepka. These spectacular, giant birds occurred all over the globe for tens of millions of years, but vanished during the Pliocene, just three million years ago. Paleontologists remain uncertain about the cause of their demise.
The lecture by Dr. Ksepka, Fossils Take Flight: Reconstructing the World's Largest Bird, will be held at the Bruce Museum on Tuesday, September 9 from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm. The lecture is free for Museum members and $15 for non-members. Reservations for this lecture are strongly suggested. Call 203-869- 0376 or email info@brucemuseum.org for reservations or information.
