ANTWERP.- Ingrid Deuss Gallery presents E.k.t.i.n., a series of new photographs by New York based artist, Marianna Rothen, and curated by Andi Potamkin, also of New York. The works that comprise E.t.k.i.n. are derived from Rothen’s art direction and still photography from the film Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, directed by Gregory Perano.

Born in Canada in 1982, Rothen became a model at age 15. She subsequently spent several years traveling and working, all the while documenting her modeling experience though photography. She now focuses her camera on mostly female characters set within the scope of a nostalgic dystopia. Combined with decrepit interiors, wilderness and seductive subjects, Rothen's photographs emanate overtones of mystery and dissatisfaction that are subsumed into a larger narrative.

Rothen utilizes natural or available light and blends traditional photographic processes with digital media. Since 2007, her work has been exhibited internationally in New York, Paris, Sydney, Cologne and Istanbul. In 2012, Rothen’s work was featured in The Last Seduction, a two-person show that appeared at the Hendershot Gallery in New York. During the same year, the artist also had a solo exhibition, Gentle Creatures at Gallery Kaune, Posnik, Spohr in Cologne, Germany. In 2014, b.frank books released her first book, Snow and Rose & other tales. In 2015, Rothen was part of Pheromone Hotbox, an exhibition showcasing the work of five women photographers at Steven Kasher Gallery.

Utilizing a solid foundation of 15 years of experience in art acquisition and photography, Ingrid Deuss started her photography gallery in Antwerp in 2011. She takes great care in the selection of each artist with whom she partners, and offers her gallery as a platform for both young, upcoming talent and more established photographers. In January 2013, she successfully introduced Smoking Kids by Frieke Janssens to the New York photo scene. In November 2013, she hosted her second exhibition at the VII gallery in Brooklyn, New York where she exhibited CHROMES, the work of Belgian photographer Nicolas Karakatsanis (Director of Photography Bullhead). Owning a degree in photography herself, Deuss possesses a keen eye to which (inter)national photographers meet outstanding standards, are able to develop a distinct visual style and dare to explore the unbeaten track of fashion and portrait photography.
