The sitcom/musical The Partridge Family starred Shirley Jones and a young David Cassidy. It ran from 1970-1974 on ABC and was one of the most popular shows on network television. It gained a following in the United Kingdom as well in the mid 1970s. In 1993-1994, Nickelodeons Nick at Night aired reruns of the Partridge Family helping to revive the shows popularity again. The sitcom has been syndicated on Fox Family, Hallmark Channel, ION Television and now airs on Antenna TV.
The animated title artwork featuring a mother partridge followed by her five cheepers (chicks) is one of only two-known pieces depicting the entire animated Partridge Family. Legendary title artist Sandy Dvore designed the title sequence with the mother partridge breaking out of her shell and leading her chicks for the shows pilot. It appeared in its entirety because the graphics were novel and clever. In 1969, when the pilot was produced, color imagery for television shows was in its infancy and title sequences mostly consisted of black and white typeface listing the shows name. Dvore decided not only to incorporate color but also used animation that had been limited to cartoons. Dvore took the color cues from the Piet Mondrian-inspired bus that the family drove.
Described as an imagemaker, artist, frontrunner and innovator, Sandy Dvore is one of the most prominent and brilliant designers of all-time. Dvores career began in the 1960s developing illustrated trade ads for Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and other prominent Hollywood stars in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He went into designing company logos developing the original logos for Lorimar, ICM and United Artist. He branched off into television and designed the main titles for The Waltons, The Partridge Family, Knots Landing, and The Young and the Restless. Dvores titles for Carol Burnetts special, Carol, Carl, Whoopi and Robin won an Emmy in 1987.
For the motion pictures business, Dvore developed a new art form, the film trade art campaign. Dvore created memorable campaign images for Lawrence of Arabia and The Great Escape.
In 2010-2011, the Beverly Hills-based Paley Center for Media did a retrospective on Dvores career.
