NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s announced the major fall auction of Prints & Multiples taking place on Tuesday November 1 and Wednesday, November 2, 2016, with a public view starting Friday, October 28. The sale includes over 300 lots from modern to contemporary masters and features selections from renowned private collections including, The Gilbert E. Kaplan Collection of Surrealist Prints, The Francey and Dr. Martin L. Gecht Collection, The Collection of Robert and Sylvia Olnick, and Property From The Collection of Marc Bell.

Presented in a stand-alone session is The Gilbert E. Kaplan Collection of Surrealist Prints, offering one of the most comprehensive selections of Surrealist prints to appear at auction. Gilbert Kaplan worked for over 30 years, crafting a thoughtful collection that exemplifies the Surrealist movement that took root during the inter-war period and spanned the globe. The collection features over 100 works by top artists of the period including Man Ray, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Wifredo Lam, and René Magritte. Highlights include Man Ray’s A l’heure de l’observatoire - les amoureux (estimate: $50,000-70,000) and a selection of rare early etchings by Max Ernst including, Pays sage II (estimate: $30,000-50,000).

Contemporary sale highlights include works from The Collection of Marc Bell, led by Andy Warhol’s Mao (estimate: $1,000,000-1,500,000) and Cowboys and Indians (estimate: $250,000-350,000), Donald Judd’s Untitled, the rare-to-market complete set of ten woodcuts in cadmium red light (estimate: $200,000-300,000), Jasper Johns’ Target (estimate: $150,000-250,000, lot 256), and impressive works by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Cy Twombly from The Collection of Robert and Sylvia Olnick.

Highlighting the modern section is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s La Danse au Moulin Rouge, from The Francey and Dr. Martin L. Gecht Collection (estimate: $300,000-500,000), one of only five known impressions printed on a larger sheet. Also featured is the vibrant etching by Henri Matisse, La Danse, (estimate: $80,000-120,000).
