LOS ANGELES, CA.- A complete suite of Andy Warhol’s four Truck screenprints leads Bonhams Prints and Multiples sale in Los Angeles on Tuesday 18 April. Each print is signed by Warhol and numbered 32 out of an edition of 60. The set is estimated at US$70,000-100,000.

Truck was produced in 1985, two years before Warhol’s untimely death in 1987. It was published in conjunction with the Bundesverband des Deutschen Guterfernverkehrs to commemorate the 20th World Congress of International Road Transportation Union.

Bonhams Director of Prints, Judith Eurich, commented, “This series showcases Warhol’s technique of multiple layering of saturated colors. The image of the truck is translucent. It is brought to life by the artist’s use of bright contrasting colors and linework that makes the vehicle look almost three dimensional.”

Other highlights of the sale include:

Touched Red by Richard Diebenkorn. Estimated at US$50,000-70,000, the work is initialed in pencil ‘AP4’ (one of the 10 artist’s proof aside from the edition of 85), and dated ‘91’. Diebenkorn created a number of abstractions and color field paintings at this time. He would often cut up working proofs, attaching them to others in order to test out possibilities. Touched Red is a perfect example of this unique working method.

Grand Masque by Henri Matisse. The French painter made this simple, masterful but unsettling image in 1948. It is signed in pencil, numbered 11 out of 25 and is estimated at US$20,000-30,000.

Polar Co-ordinates VI by Frank Stella. Dating from 1980, this complex, colorful work is signed in pencil and numbered 23 out of 100. Estimated at US$6,000-8,000, it is from the Polar Co-ordinates for Ronnie Peterson suite, dedicated to the memory of the Swedish auto racer, and friend of the artist, Ronnie Peterson who died during the Monza Grand Prix in 1978. Stella’s work has been the subject of a recent major exhibition at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
