HUNTINGTON, N.Y.- The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Feast the Eye, Fool the Eye - Still Life and Trompe-L’Oeil Paintings from the Oscar and Maria Salzer Collection, Offered in conjunction with The Fresno Metropolitan Museum. Fresno Metropolitan Museum Spanning three centuries and nine countries, this charming exhibition features 43 paintings by European and American masters of still life and trompe-l’oeil painting. The still lifes naturally depict their place and period, from the solid bourgeois materialism of 17th-century Holland to the polished approach to nature’s bounty on the part of the 19th-century Americans such as Andrew Way and James Peale. Complementing the beautiful still lifes, are trompe-l’oeil paintings, which have been a favorite of European artistic sensibilities since birds were tempted to fly through the painted windows of Pompeii—and plummeted, in painful confusion, on the inevitable rebound. Feast the Eye, Fool the Eye is both an invitation to examine the texture and tastes of cross continental interiors—and a playful challenge to see if artists such as Alexander Pope and John Peto may have succeeded in playing tricks on your well trained eyes.
