WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA.- The Norton Museum of Art presents Zhang Huan: Seeds of Hamburg, through February 20, 2005. Seeds of Hamburg is a performance piece documented in twelve photographs by Zhang Huan, one of China’s preeminent contemporary artists. For this piece, performed in 2002, the artist entered a cage constructed of wood and chicken wire into which 28 doves were released and settled on his body, which was covered in birdseed. Accompanied by the music of Wang Guotong, a contemporary Chinese composer whose compositions blend Asiatic and classical Western traditions, this simple sequence of events concluded with the artist leaving the cage, cradling a dove that pulled a red ribbon from his mouth. Captured in these twelve large-scale photographs, the doves, ribbon and seed become symbols of hope, freedom and rebirth. Four of the photographs are promised gifts to the Museum. Organized by the Norton Museum of Art.
