Rare Himalayan Birkin pushes Lux Accessories Auction over $1.75 million

DALLAS, TX.- Multiple bidders pursued a rare Hermès Himalayan croc Birkin until it climbed to $93,750, leading Heritage Auctions' Autumn Luxury Accessories Auction to $1,756,860 Sept. 22 in Beverly Hills, California. The sale prompted spirited bidding from more than 700 collectors through those in the auction room, phone bidders and those bidding online through HA's Heritage Live! platform.

The Hermès 30cm Himalayan Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag with Palladium Hardware is a rarity, considered the pinnacle of any Hermès collection and only offered to VIP clients. Getting the skin to take on the desired color involves a lengthy and difficult dye process, which is part of the reason why such bags in such high demand.

An Hermès 35cm Matte Amethyst Niloticus Crocodile Birkin Bag with Palladium Hardware also proved to be extremely popular, prompting multiple bids before closing at $87,500, more than twice its high pre-auction estimate, while an Hermès Crocus Alligator Kelly Pochette Bag with Gold Hardware also crushed its pre-auction estimates when it brought $50,000.

"This auction showed the strong market for exotics, which performed extremely well in this sale," Heritage Auctions Luxury Accessories Director Diane D'Amato said, "including nine of the top 10 lots."

Other top lots that inspired flurries of bids included an Hermès 35cm Bougainvillea Porosus Crocodile Birkin Bag with Gold Hardware that yielded $45,000 and an Hermès 35cm Black Alligator, Clemence & Calf Box Leather Birkin Bag with Palladium Hardware and an Hermès Shiny Braise Niloticus Crocodile Kelly Pochette Bag with Gold Hardware, each of which realized $40,000.

• Hermès 35cm Shiny Black Porosus Crocodile Birkin Bag with Gold Hardware: $35,000

• Hermès 28cm Himalayan Niloticus Crocodile Plume Bag with Palladium Hardware: $31,250

• Hermès Limited Edition 35cm Black Evercalf Leather & Denim Shadow Birkin Bag with Palladium Hardware: $28,750 --
