NEW YORK, NY.- Bidding is now open for the
Lark Mason Associates sale of fine art, which includes a recently discovered pair of earrings, circa 1930, made by Alexander Calder (1898-1976), the noted 20th century American sculptor. Though primarily recognized for his iconic large public works and mobiles, it is surmised that while he was on a three-month tour of Europe, he created the earrings- a simple, miniature version of his kinetic mobiles-which he gifted to a family friend (est.: $60,000-100,000).
Other highlights include Live Oak Trees in Sunlight, by Robert Julian Onderdonk (1882-1922). The San Antonio native and student of William Meritt Chase created this rarely produced large-sized work, measuring 33 ½ x 38 ½ inches, in 1916. Consigned by the family of the original owner, the painting displays the artist's characteristic style and images of bluebonnets in a hill country landscape (est.: $300,000-500,000).
Flowers form a sub-theme in the sale with the inclusion of a study of Water Lillies, by Claude Monet (1840-1926). Some of Monet's Water Lillies are enormous and the preparatory studies for these were left in his studio after his death. This work, circa 1916, is one of the reduced images, with an estimate of $100,000-150,000.
A nice selection of Old Master paintings is included in the sale, with a masterwork by Matthius Van Helmont (1623-1685), in collaboration with Hindrik Van Minderhout. Van Helmont, was a noted painter of small-scale interiors and intimate scenes. He painted The Arrival of Saint Anne in the Port of Antwerp, an enormous work, measuring 57 x 107 inches, dated 1662 (est.: $50,000-80,000).
Among the other offerings is a selection of small mid-20th century bronzes; a large terra-cotta portrait bust of a young woman by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse; prints by Joan Miro (1893-1983), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), and Donald Judd (1924-1994); Bridge over Owl Kil, an early landscape by Anna Mary Robertson (Grandma Moses) dated 1947; and a rare view of Niagara Falls attributed to Robert Walter Weir.
Many of the paintings will be on view at the iGavel sales room, 227 East 120th Street New York and at 210 West Mill Street n New Braunfels, Texas. The online sale continues through November 19.
