Antique Map Thief Sentenced to Four and a Half Years |
SWANSEA COURT, WALES.- The Swansea Crown Court has sentenced antique map thief Peter Bellwood to four-and-a-half years of jail. He confessed to stealing 50 maps. But the National Library of Wales maintains he stole 105 from theis institution. He began stealing maps at the National Library of Wales in 2000.
National librarian Andrew Green stated, "Clearly they (the security measures) weren't 100% successful. It's impossible for them to be so, without closing the doors and keeping them closed, and we've a responsibility to allow people to see what's in the library."
The illicit activities of Peter Bellwood were first uncovered by the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen. Danish authorities are planning to request the extradition of Peter Bellwood for the alleged thefts there.
