LOS ANGELES, CA.- L.A. Artcore Brewery Annex presents Michael Maas “Development of Themes”, June 1 – 30, 2005. This exhibition of paintings from 1997 to 2005 documents the development of Michael Maas’ current “Alhambra Series”, described by art critic Suvan Geer as “biomorphic geoabstraction”, from its early roots in botanical realism.

The show begins with the 12 piece “Dozen Roses” (oil on panel, 17” x 19” each), a decorator-friendly set of individual flower paintings arranged in what Maas calls a “color-theory class grid”.

Next, a suite of paintings from his “Summer Series” demonstrate a progressive move toward abstraction, leading to the 12 piece “Twelve Moods” (acrylic on panel, 20” x 20” each), a set of yin-yang shapes arranged in a grid echoing the “Dozen Roses”.

The basic “one to one” unit established with “Twelve Moods” is next explored in many variations, which repeat and multiply, ultimately leading to large, complex pieces such as “Alhambra 55” (acrylic on 3 panels, 80” x 144”), which incorporates 108 units.
