Gauguin: The Vision of the Sermon Will Be in Edinburgh |
Paul Gauguin, The Vision of the Sermon (detail), 1888.
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.- The Royal Scottish Academy will present Gauguin: The Vision of the Sermon from Wednesday, 6 July, 2005 - Sunday, 2 October, 2005, sponsored by Baillie Gifford. The Vision of the Sermon will bring together works by the Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, his immediate mentors such as Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas, and his younger contemporaries, including Emile Bernard, Paul Sérusier, Maurice Denis and Henri van de Velde.
Drawing on prestigious public and private collections, it will offer the viewer an unrepeatable chance to understand The Vision of the Sermon in a rich context, exploring the biographical, pictorial and cultural circumstances that enabled Gauguin to make such a radical statement in paint in 1888.
This will be the first time a concentrated exhibition has been devoted to this arresting and complex painting, to its stylistic and thematic origins, critical impact and history.
