Hindman announces highlights included in the Native American Art Auction

CINCINNATI, OH.- This Friday, Hindman’s Native American Art auction will spotlight a variety of one-of-a-kind and historically significant lots spanning the Paleo Indian Period through the 1930s, with nearly 300 lots of prehistoric artifacts, pottery, jewelry, beadwork, weaving and more. The auction features several important collections including Property from The John Baldwin Trust (Chicago, Illinois), the Collection of Bruce and Claire Montgomerie, the Marilyn Eber Collection of Native American Art (Denver, Colorado), the Collection of Robert P. Hunter, Jr. and Barbara Hunter (Alpharetta, Georgia), the Estate of Donna Wasserstrom (Carefree, Arizona) and the Carl Lewis Druckman Collection (Arizona). Paleo points from the Collection of Claude “Henry” Withers (Laconia, Indiana) will also be offered to start the sale.

John Baldwin Trust

John Baldwin was a distinguished collector and author of several books of Native American and Frontier Era Weaponry. Standout lots include a Prairie Grizzly Bear Claw Necklace, dated to fourth quarter of the 19th century, and was collected from the University of Iowa’s Theatrical Department (lot 23; estimate: $20,000-30,000). Also featured is an 8-1/4 inch Adena Flint Ridge Blade (lot 20; estimate: $10,000-20,000).

Collection of Bruce and Claire Montgomerie

The Bruce and Claire Montgomerie Collection of Navajo Textiles and Pueblo Pottery consists of Late Classic and Transitional weavings. Included is a Second Phase blanket (lot 169; estimate: $8,000-10,000), a Germantown weaving (lot 228; estimate: $10,000-$15,000) and a Germantown Hubble Revival (lot 227; estimate: $9,000-11,000). Early pottery includes a Zia polychrome pottery olla (lot 199; estimate: $6,000-8,000) and a Kewa Pottery Jar (lot 185; estimate: $1,500-2,500).

Additional Highlights

Other noteworthy lots include a Yankton Sioux Beaded Buffalo Hide Shot Pouch, with Powder Horn (lot 53; estimate: $20,00-30,000), a large cache of Hornstone Blades (estimate: $10,000-15,000), a Steatite Biconical Tube Pipe (lot 18; estimate: $10,000-15,000) and a Nez Perce Painted Flute with Photograph (lot 51; estimate: $8,000-10,000).
