ALICANTE, SPAIN.- The Lady of Elche, one of Spain´s most important works of art, was returned to the municipality where it was found some 35 years ago. The stone carving, which dates about five centuries before the birth of Christ, will be on view until November 1 in an individual room in the Elche Museum. The lady first started travelling in 1897 after she was sold for 40 dollars by the person who discovered her, archaeologist Pierre Paris. After Marshall Petain and General Franco negotiated in 1941, the lady returned to Spain and was exhibited in the Prado. Afterwards it was sent to the Archeological Museum in Madrid where it had been since. The Lady of Elche will remain in a specially built box that preserves its security, temperature and humidity. Over 800 people lined the streets to see the relic arrive in its hometown.
