SARASOTA, FL.- The John and Mable Museum of Art at Florida State University presents the exhibit Encore! The Art of the Historic Asolo Theater. The late-eighteenth century Italian Asolo Theater came to The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in 1949, and instantly became one of the most significant historic theaters in America. It was the inspiration for the Ringlings acquisition of an entire collection of works of art related to the history of the theater. Furthermore, it had an instrumental role in the cultural and performing arts of Sarasota.
This exhibition will showcase highlights of the Ringlings theater collection from the beginnings of modern theater in the late Renaissance through the twentieth century. Integral to the exhibition will be the opening of the completely restored historic Asolo Theater in its specifically designed and dedicated new space. This exhibition provides a vivid and appropriate presentation of historical, artistic, and cultural material to accompany the new life of a jewel of a theatrical setting.
