Escher: The Art of Infinity Featuring Prints and Drawings Sold to Benefit the Robert Owen Lehman Foundation, and A Goal in Life: Leo Messi x Refik Anadol concluded on Tuesday, 22 July achieving $20.4 million in total. The sale series comprised more than 500 works, spanning the post-war and contemporary eras, bridging an array of artistic innovators and generational icons working across mediums and genres.
The final sale came to an outstanding conclusion on Tuesday, 22 Julythe highly successful M.C. Escher: The Art of Infinity Featuring Prints and Drawings Sold to Benefit the Robert Owen Lehman Foundation which realized $7,777,980. The sale was 100% sold, achieving 467% against its low estimate. More than half of the works in the sale sold for six figuresdespite only one lot carrying a presale estimate in excess of $100,000, and an impressive 97% of lots sold above their high estimate. Nearly every work on paper in the sale broke the previous record of $92,000 and of the 34 prints, 32 broke the record set for the subject featured. The top two lots each far surpassed expectations, both exceeding half a million dollars: Reptiles by M.C. Escher realized $529,200 and Relativity achieved $504,000more than ten times its low estimate of $50,000. One third of bidders and buyers were new to Christie's and Millennials and Gen Z accounted for 28% of total participants.
Single lot sale A Goal in Life: Leo Messi x Refik Anadol also concluded on Tuesday, 22 July achieving a total of $1,865,000 for the one-of-a-kind digital artwork, with proceeds benefitting multiple nonprofits, including Inter Miami CF Foundation's global partnership with UNICEF, which supports access to quality education programs in five countries across Latin America and the Caribbean.
First Open | Post-War & Contemporary Art closed out on Friday 18 July, offering more than 300 lots by post-war and contemporary icons, such as Alex Katz, Ed Ruscha, and Helen Frankenthaler. The sale achieved $7,852,446, selling 83% by lot and 119% by value. The top lot of the sale was an untitled watercolor by Elaine de Kooning from 1956, which realized $352,800, more than 23 times its low estimate of $15,000.
Contemporary Edition: New York closed Thursday, 17 July, totaling $2,030,994, selling 83% by lot, and 100% by value. The leading highlight of the sale was The Book of HOV: A Tribute to JAY-Z, an exclusive Limited Edition of the collaborative project executed by Roc Nation, Assouline and Daniel Arsham in December 2024, which achieved $163,800.
Pressing Forward: Contemporary Editions from a Private Detroit Collection a selection of more than 75 prints and multiples, closed on Wednesday, 16 July. In total, the sale realized $919,044, selling 85% by lot and 100% by value. The top lot was Gretchen, from Men in the Cities by Robert Longo, which realized $176,400, nearly six times its low estimate of $30,000.
