LONDON.- In recognition and celebration of the artistic brilliance of artists, designers and makers from across the Nordic countries where light is a defining element of life and culture Christie's is holding a private selling exhibition Nordic Lights from 20 November to 12 December, which will be on view at Christie's London and available online. Showcasing a curated selection of important cross-category works of art alongside exceptional design pieces from distinguished collections, works will span the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, with prices from £85,000. The theme is reflected in the wild landscapes of Pekka Halonen and Akseli Gallen-Kallela, the quiet interior scenes of Vilhelm Hammershøi, Carl Larsson and Karin Mamma Andersson, and the refined elegance of Paavo Tynell's iconic lighting designs.
Anna Touzin, Senior Specialist, Director, Post-War and Contemporary, and Alastair Plumb, Director, Senior Specialist, 19th Century European Art: Christie's is proud to present a private selling exhibition of paintings and design pieces by leading Nordic artists from the 19th to the 21st Century. The exhibition puts in conversation Nordic artists who have looked to nature and light as inspiration. Defining figures such as Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi or Carl Larsson have inspired later generations of artists including Karin Mamma Andersson, Per Kirkeby, Ida Ekblad and the Finnish-Lapland painter Reidar Särestöniemi. Nordic designers such as Josef Frank will be celebrated alongside these works, illuminated with beautiful Paavo Tynell lighting. We are also pleased to be collaborating with contemporary makers whose work is influenced by the Nordic region.
Building on Christie's history of selling notable Nordic art, from Great Danish artists of the 19th century to the Ole Faarup Collection, this exhibition complements the widespread appreciation and dynamic interest in this period, as evidenced by the recently opened: Nordic noir works on paper from Edvard Munch to Mamma Andersson exhibition at the British Museum until 22 March 2026; the first UK exhibition of Anna Ancher: Painting Light at Dulwich Picture Gallery until 8 March 2026; and Pekka Halonen: An ode to Finland at the Petit Palais in Paris until 22 February 2026.
